“Joe Barnett has been our friend and assistant for many years. He has two qualities that make him an excellent presenter: he knows the anatomical principles and he relates to people in a sympathetic manner. His presentations are unhurried, hands on demonstrations, this is the easiest way to absorb these ideas.” ~ Paul and Suzee Grilley

More and more teachers and practitioners are exploring Yin Yoga. This is a natural reaction to what has become an extremely yang health culture. Yin yoga is the relaxed practice of floor postures for three to five minutes at a time. A yin practice emphasizes the connective tissues of the hips, thighs, pelvis and lower spine. It prepares the body and mind for longer meditation practices. By drawing the student’s awareness away from the muscles and deeper into the bones a deep level of relaxed focus is achieved.

Your Trainer, Joe Barnett is a Master Teacher of Yin Yoga. Joe lives in Tuscon, Arizona and teaches extensively throughout the United States and Canada. Joe is passionate about teaching students to find their own natural alignment in yoga postures, particularly through Yin Yoga. Trained by Paul Grilley the founder of Yin Yoga, and assistant Trainer at Paul’s trainings, Joe is uniquely qualified to bring this Training to Yoga University.

This 40-hour training is a strong complimentary training for a current Yoga Teacher of any style or a spring board for the student who is ready to take the leap into a broader perspective and fuller appreciation of the practice of Yin Yoga.

Training Course Outline:

Part 1: Foundations: Teaching a Practice of Surrender:

Yin Yoga is a very simple practice. We settle into an asana for 3-7 minutes and slowly relax our muscles to allow the deeper drier tissues (the connective tissues that wrap our muscles and make up our joint capsules) to be safely and therapeutically stretched, stimulated and strengthened.

The alignment rules of the postures are also simple, but more importantly they are functional and organic: We listen to our bodies and lead ourselves into the shape that follows the natural contours of our spine, pelvis and hips.

However, bringing ourselves into this simplicity can be quite challenging. The practice of being still and quiet for minutes at a time can be trying enough, let alone while dropping into a powerful stretch that moves across wide sheets of fascia and drops deep into the ligaments of the joints. Listening to our bodies to find the natural alignment of the pose requires a power of discrimination and an understanding and familiarity with the ever-changing sensations in the body.

In this training, we will analyze, observe and practice all of these elements of Yin Yoga in depth. We will examine ourselves on a personal level with ancient meditation techniques that guide us into a steady awareness of the changing sensations in the postures. We will study with slides of real bones and by articulating the joints on a plastic skeleton. But mostly we will have an interactive, hands-on study and examine each other with anatomical range of motion (ROM) tests.

The study culminates in a truer understanding of the infinite variety of human bodies (from the bones up), an understanding of why every posture should be modified to the individual, and the basic techniques to help guide each Yin Yoga student with their unique skeletal structures into the appropriate asana for them.

Part 2: Understanding Alignment, Functional and Organic:

In this second module of Yin Yoga Teacher Training, we will go further into the study of skeletal variations and individual modifications. This is the foundation of Yin Yoga Teacher Training – which we reinforce with continual, live and interactive anatomical studies; and because the source of most injuries in Yoga is a misunderstanding of anatomical differences in our bones. We will go further into the study of Functional Alignment and into schematics of muscle, fascia and subtle energy channels in order to focus less on what we are avoiding and a little more on our target areas in each posture.

This weekend culminates into the art of developing an effective and appropriate Energy Curve in a yoga class, and the art of sequencing Yin Yoga postures for a dominantly Yin class or as a means to support a more fiery and/or fluid Flow (Yang) class.

Part 3: Advanced Yin Yoga Training:

Part 3: YIN YOGA NEXT LEVEL: Yin/Yang Yoga: The Energy Curve

This is an advanced course designed for the Yogini who has completed at least one Yin Foundation Module with Joe Barnett.

Once the functional approach (14 Skeletal Segments, 10 Muscle Groups, 7 Archetypes) is understood, this quiet practice of surrender has the potential to lead the Yogini’s awareness into deeper and more complex levels of physical, psycho-emotional and subtle energetics.

This module (Yin/Yang Yoga: The Energy Curve) compares, contrasts, and integrates the Yin and Yang efforts in this Taoist approach developed by Paul Grilley.

The course begins with an introduction to the Yang sequences developed by Paul and Suzee Grilley; as well as a review of the Yin Foundations through a deep, quiet practice of surrender.

We will then experiment with many Yin/Yang options, discuss the potential benefits and challenges for different individual needs, and naturally feel and compare the results in “the rebound”.

Should the practice begin uplifting and fiery, only to gradually cool down to the earth? Or should it begin with efforts to sink into gravity only to finish by soaring with Dragon wings? Even a “pure” Yin practice includes the subtle Yang efforts needed to gently shake off the previous pose and prepare for the next. The transition from one energetic effort to the next is the most fundamental consideration when developing a sequence.
